20th Anniversary Stories Realising early on that little was known in the UK about the making of the traditional felt rugs (shyrdaks) of Kyrgyzstan, in 2007 Felt travelled to a village in the Naryn region - famed for the quality of its rugs. Over the course of a week, captured in hundreds of photographs and videos, Felt documented the process that has hardly changed in the last two and a half thousand years. From shearing the sheep; making the sheets of felt by dragging wetted wool fibres rolled up in a reed mat behind a galloping horse; dying the felt; drawing, cutting and stitching the patterns; adding the decorative braid; to finally securing this decorated surface layer to the thick plain felt base to create the finished rug. These photographs have never failed to astonish everyone who has seen them. 20th Anniversary Stories After trading for almost a year, on 2nd February 2007 Felt launched to interior designers with an exhibition of rugs mounted on the walls of an art gallery in London’s West End. My belief was that the graphic patterns held their own as artworks on the walls as well as on the floor. With hindsight, that is something that the yurt dwelling nomads in the Tien Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzstan have known for millennia. A big thank you to @oursoo and to @katherinecampbell00 (both pictured) who manned the decks at the launch exhibition and at pretty well all the fairs and exhibitions since.
