20th Anniversary Stories

After trading for almost a year, on 2nd February 2007 Felt launched to interior designers with an exhibition of rugs mounted on the walls of an art gallery in London’s West End.

My belief was that the graphic patterns held their own as artworks on the walls as well as on the floor.

With hindsight, that is something that the yurt dwelling nomads in the Tien Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzstan have known for millennia.

A big thank you to @oursoo and to @katherinecampbell00 (both pictured) who manned the decks at the launch exhibition and at pretty well all the fairs and exhibitions since.

20th Anniversary Stories

Soon after the first shipment of felt rugs (shyrdaks) arrived at Felt in London on 23 April 2006, I found myself sitting beside artist Maggi Hambling outside a pub in Battersea.

Asked what I did, I explained that I was setting up a business selling rugs. These rugs were an ancient tradition, with patterns of interlocking motifs that represent the flora and fauna that surround the nomads in the Tien Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzstan.

Maggi looked at the images I had just taken on my digital camera.

“F-ck me,” she said, “Matisse two-and-a-half thousand years before Matisse!”

The first shipment of felt rugs (shyrdaks) arrived at Felt in London twenty years ago this month (23.04.2006 - when this picture was taken) after two years of planning and preparation with my original Kyrgyz business partner.

This was ten years after I had started collecting shyrdaks while working for BBC World Service in Kyrgyzstan in 1996.

This order of a rug and four cushions is just being prepared for shipping to Italy.

Rug 2387 measures 2m x 3m and combines all-natural, un-dyed, grey wool felt with a deep navy blue colour, with borders in white and black felt.

The pair of this rug and the opposite colourway - rug 2386 - is cut from the exact same sheets of felt and is currently in stock and available to purchase. (third image)

Very happy to receive this picture from a long time Felt client showing a recent purchase newly installed in her apartment in Venice, Italy.

Rug 2425 combines all-natural, un-dyed, white wool felt, combined with a deep navy blue, these two colours separated by wool braid in a lighter shade of blue.

Our client has cleverly echoed these colours in the beautiful sofa cushions and furniture, to great effect.

The rug measures 1.45m x 1.95m. It’s pair - rug 2426 (second image) - is the opposite colour way, cut from the exact same sheets of felt, and is currently in stock and available to buy.
